Carer Skills Program

Carer Skills Introduction provides carers with an overview of our new Carer Skills program created to support carers of older people. The session will focus on:

  • The topics included in each of the Carer Skills program modules
  • How to easily search and select your topic of interest
  • Strate​gies to address the needs of the person being cared for
  • Where to access up to date information and who can support you in your caring role.
At the end of the session participants will receive a link to the Carer Skills Modules and video series. 

You will require access to a computer with speakers (a microphone and video camera are a bonus). Training is delivered using the ZOOM platform. Carers NSW will send you instructions about how you can join the session on confirmation of your registration.

Th​e duration for this workshop is 1.5 hours for carers and 30 minutes for service providers.

Carer Skills Course provides an opportunity for carers to build their practical skills, knowledge and confidence in caring for an older person. The course will be held over 6 weeks, with carers spending 2 hours each week exploring a different topic. Talk to our facilitator, share your experiences, ask questions and learn more about: 

  • Week 1: The different approaches to caring
  • Week 2: Access to services and supports, carer rights, complaints, legal documents, payments and supplements   
  • Week 3: Strategies to take care of your own health and wellbeing  
  • Week 4: Assisting someone with daily activities like personal care, eating, drinking and transport  
  • Week 5: Moving someone safely, including safe body position, common transfers and instructional videos
  • Week 6: Assisting someone with health care tasks like falls prevention, medications, planning ahead, palliative care and life after caring.
